Wood Encouragement Policy


In December 2014 Latrobe City Council became the first in Australia to adopt a wood encouragement policy (WEP) for public buildings. A WEP generally requires responsibly sourced wood to be considered, where feasible, as the primary construction material in all new-build and refurbished projects.

Forest and Wood Products R&D Corporation

FWPRDC is a venture funded jointly by the Commonwealth Government and the Australian forest and wood products industry. Their mission is to provide effective and relevant forest research and development. This site provides information on funding and structure of the FWPRDC as well as their current projects and publications.

Forest Products Commission

The Forest Product Commission is 7-member group established by the WA Government to oversee the commercial production, allocation and sale of forest products. Their responsibility includes forest products from the State’s native forests as well as State owned and managed plantation resources.

National Forest Inventory

The National Forest Inventory collects and distributes information on Australia’s forests and was established as a partnership between the Commonwealth and all State and Territory Governments. The site provides information on the tenure of Australian native forests, forest types, maps and distribution of the nations forest estate. Information on forecasts can also be found here.

AFG is an organisation whose membership is comprised of farm foresters and plantation growers, native forest managers, forest investors, investment companies, consultants, suppliers and forestry companies. AFG promotes the sustainable management of private native forests with objectives that are consistent with the National Forest Policy Statement. Plantations 2020

Plantations 2020 is a joint venture between Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry Australia, the forest industries, Australian Forest Growers, Plantations Australia and the Ministerial Council on Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture. Plantations 2020 is a national strategy that aims to develop the nations plantation industry and treble the area of Australian timber plantations to more than 3 million hectares by 2020.

The Insitute of Foresters of Australia has a membership of people who are involved in all aspects of the forestry profession. Their aim is to provide leardership in forestry and to give scientific advice and assistance to all people interested in forest issues. Timber Insight Pty Ltd provides technical support focused on timber in construction, working closely with WA and national timber suppliers, producers, fabricators, designers and builders on timber performance, assessment and specification. We also work closely with home, multi-residential and commercial builders on timber construction practice. We are registered NATA assessors for timber manufacture and wood quality and provide third party timber inspection and certification.

In Western Australia Timber Insight is part of the FWPA Wood Solutions national technical team. We assist with professional development and training on timber performance, construction practice, timber grading, and product knowledge. Timber Insight also provides procurement services for specialised and non-standard sized timber products, and installation of timber products in primarily commercial projects. Through our associated company Engenuity Consulting Engineers we provide structural, geo-technical and civil engineering services for builders, designers and developers.
